Wacom STU-500 Chosen for its Superior Performance and SDK Support
The Indonesian government is using cutting-edge technologies to improve productivity in various ministries and to enhance the service experience when customers interact with civil servants and departments.
The positive economic outlook is encouraging better lifestyle and commercial activities. As a result there are more people and companies purchasing cars and motorbikes. The vehicle population is experiencing exponential growth in recent years.
To ensure proper management of motorists, the Indonesian Traffic Police needed to issue a standard driver ID card for all provinces, and motorists are expected to carry this driver ID card at all time when they are on the road.

The Indonesia Police issued a tender for a nationwide exercise to make high quality driver ID cards for all motorists. The winning main contractor for this tender engaged P.T. Electronic City to supply selected components and the system integration required by the Indonesia Traffic Police.
During the bidding stage of the tender, P.T. Electronic City had to assist the main contractor in assessing various offerings available in the market. One of the components that required electronic signature capturing was sourced from a popular American signature pad maker. Wacom caught the attention of P.T. Electronic City with its good references and success stories in the region. Wacom’s distributor in Indonesia was immediately contacted by P.T. Electronic City to recommend a suitable signature pad from Wacom’s range of products.
Looking at the stringent requirements of the tender, Wacom decided to recommend the heavy-duty STU-500 signature tablet. In addition, Wacom provided the SDK (Software Development Kit) for integration purposes. P.T. Electronic City compared the performance of Wacom’s STU-500 with the signature pad from the United States for signature quality, durability and availability of SDK support. The project team of P.T. Electronic City spotted the distinct differences between the products and the Wacom STU-500 became their choice with its superior performance and strong SDK support. During the evaluation stage, Wacom was responsive towards any queries regarding the SDK and integration issues. P.T. Electronic City felt very confident about Wacom’s support and decided to use the STU-500 for its tender submission.
After various considerations and studies into the multiple proposals, the Indonesian Traffic Police department released the tender result and the main contractor (partner of P.T. Electronic City) won.
P.T. Electronic City was informed about the project delivery deadline and quickly assembled the relevant resources to work on the project. In the first 3 months, the development and project team had to work around the clock in shifts to deliver the first phase of the project. A total of 10 developers were employed to work closely with Wacom to use the SDK to integrate the signature capturing functionality and other devices with the legacy system.

Signature capture within application
Wacom support and swift responses allowed the developers to perform the integration smoothly and on time.
The integrated system is comprised of the Wacom STU-500, a 5-finger (left/right hand) biometric scanner, a 9 Megapixel digital camera, a professional datacard printer and a PC. Interoperability between all the devices and the system worked perfectly.
The system is deployed in more than 80 traffic police stations and 35 mobile stations across 7 provinces. As many as 4 STU-500 signature tablets are installed in each traffic police station and 1-2 units are installed in each mobile station (in a bus).

Typical setup at traffic police station
Training was given to 4 officers in each station and the training period lasted about 2 days.
Every station was given an operating manual for reference purpose.

According to the Project leader, the Indonesian Traffic Police was able to reduce the signature capture time required for a driver ID from 6 minutes (using traditional paper, printing and scanning to system) to a mere 5 seconds with the Wacom STU-500 signature tablet. Therefore, the solution including the STU-500 proved to be 72 times faster! It simplified a 4-step workflow into 1 step, which lessened the workload and reduced human resources requirements.
In this project, the customer especially appreciated the STU-500’s 5-inch LCD panel, as it was protected by tempered glass, a feature useful in places where users more roughly handled the devices. In addition, the battery-free pen and tablet were welcomed, as the running costs and maintenance were major considerations. The development team leader was also pleased with the SDK support provided by Wacom, as it aided them in integrating with the KASIM system flawlessly and on time.
P.T. Electronic City rated Wacom highly in terms of innovation, performance and quality, and would recommend Wacom to other companies who require electronic signature solutions.
The project leader said, “Wacom has given good pre/post sales support in a cordial partnership.”
The development team leader said, “The availability of the SDK and helpful SDK support from Wacom is extremely beneficial to our development work and integration.”
The head of procurement said, “Wacom prices are competitive and offer high value for the money.”
